"One of my favorite things to do is ask one of them what is one quality he/she likes about the other person. Sometimes they laugh, sometimes they start thinking and say beautiful things to each other."

Lukas Korynta is a wedding photographer from Praque and soon to be based in Portland, Oregon. Thanks for taking the time and answering our questions!

1. When and how did you start with Photography?

Professionally, over four years ago. It was that typical story of shooting for friends or friends of friends for almost no money and realizing “man, this is actually fun and pretty easy to do!” I remember I didn’t even bring extra batteries to the first wedding I shot so I had to charge every few hours. And of course there was something important going on every time my battery died! I learned my lesson early.

2. What inspires you the most?

No matter how cliche it sounds, I must say it’s the people. Meeting different couples, families or individual personalities along the way and seeing where they are, what they’re all about or where they’re going is by far my favorite part of this job. There have been times when I felt totally changed and inspired after getting close with some of my clients. I realize I still have a long way to go as a human being, as a boyfriend/husband, as a friend, son etc. So it’s pretty amazing to be constantly meeting other people and learning from them. Besides that, I’m always inspired by music. You know, those songs that make you feel something and you just want to pack your bag and go somewhere. One of my all time favorites is Gregory Alan Isakov for example. Just listen some of his songs and you’ll see what I mean.

3. What do you like to do, if you are not behind the camera?

I’m pretty much always on the go haha. Just got back from a three month trip around the west coast and I loved every single part of it. Being on the road, exploring new places, finding an old guitar in a random airbnb and playing some worship songs just for fun, making ramen for dinner after a long day, hanging out with people around the fire… I also love watching or playing basketball, that’s my getaway. I grew up playing this game and later on I worked as a sports journalist which brought me to the US for the first time actually as I was covering the Knicks. It’s a long story for another day.

4. Where was the best location you’ve been so far?

I want to say Yosemite as I still think its Glacier Point is the most beautiful view in the world (sorry, Iceland). Lately I also fell in love with Big Bear Lake area (also in California) with its beautiful cabins, local restaurants and forests all around. I was just there when the first snow fell down and it felt amazing! (sort of like that Gregory Alan Isakov stuff I mentioned).

5. Which equipment do you use mainly?

I shoot Canon cameras since year one and mostly have 35mm or 50mm lens on. I also have a little Fuji for personal stuff and use it as a not so heavy backup for weddings. I’m obsessed with Fuji colors (I’m sort of an editing and presets freak) so that’s a fun camera system to play around with. I even wrote a review and a comparison of its colors that still gets more views than the rest of my website. Maybe I should only do reviews from now on haha.

6. Do you have any tips to direct your couples how to pose?

One of my favorite things to do is ask one of them what is one quality he/she likes about the other person. Sometimes they laugh, sometimes they start thinking and say beautiful things to each other. One time the guy actually started tearing up after what his fiancee said about him, that’s been by far my favorite engagement shoot moment.

7. What is your favourite life quote?

This might not be a life quote but a phrase I’m getting back to lately is “keep flying, keep flying”. God keeps showing me those words through my heart and other people I meet along the way that it’s almost ridiculous how often this phrase always finds its way back to me. I’ve always been a dreamer and someone who always chooses the crazy path (like moving across the world to the west coast and building my business from the scratch again even though I was totally thriving in Europe). So this “keep flying” thing fits and I love it.

8. What would you do now, if you hadn‘t become a photographer?

I think I’d still be a sports journalist. Or a professional coffee drinker, I’d like that.

Thanks Lukas!
